Il n'en paraît pas, mais Thomas est complètement aveugle face à un accident vasculaire cérébral à l'âge de 10 ans. Malgré son handicap, il découvre le surf à l'adolescence et comme les sprinteurs, c'est avec un guide qu'il s'entraîne et suit les compétitions. 

"Mon pote Arthur, qui va surfer avec moi, il va être mes yeux. Alors, c'est lui qui va me dire et me donner toutes les indications sur l'heure où arrive la vague, d'où aller... C'est celui qui me permettra de m'orienter dans l'espace."

At 10 years old, Thomas Da Silva's world went dark. A stroke took his
sight — the kind of life event that stops most people in their tracks.
